Audio-Visual over Internet Protocol also referred to as “AVoIP or AV/IP” has been around for quite some time, however it has primarily been utilized in commercial environments. Since Manufacturers have invested heavily into this technology as the inevitable future of Audio/Video signal Distribution. AV/IP technology now accommodates Residential, Commercial, Government and Broadcasting environments.
How does it work?
AVoIP technology offers the ability to view a Source such as: Cable Box, DVD or Roku Player, by transmitting the signal from the Source to a Monitor Display utilizing the LAN, WAN or Internet via a seamless network switch. Simply put, the Source(s) plugs into an IP Encoder unit using a typical HDMI cable, the Encoder then plugs into the Network Switch Via CAT6 cable. The Encoder job is to encapsulate and compress the audio/video information in packets and send the packets via the Network Switch to an IP Decoder located at or behind the Display(s). A CAT6 cable from a switch plugs into the Decoder unit which then De-compresses the encapsulated packets for HD and or 4K video signals. The Decoder has an HDMI output that will plug in to the Display for video and audio. Most applications will require the use of the Manufacturers software program and or a 3rd party Control Program such as Crestron, Savant, Control 4, Etc.
The benefits to this technology is that after the initial investment the system becomes very cost-effective providing flexibility, scalability and maintenance simplicity by replacing individual units if failure occurs versus an entire matrix switcher system. This technology will also work in conjunction with existing A/V infrastructures.
