Bring a true digital experience to your home theater with our fully digital Mini DisplayPort adapter. The Kanex iAdapt 51 supports 1080p video and digital audio for Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, iMac.
Combine high definition video and digital surround sound to create the ultimate home theater experience.
| ||Automatic EDID and HDCP compliant |
This cable has an auto–EDID feature built-in that adapts to maximum resolution depending on users display. If a user has a 720p HDTV, it will read the EDID and adjust Mini DisplayPort output automatically and vice versa for 1080i/1080p displays.
| ||5.1 Surround Sound Audio |
The iAdapt 51 provides digital surround sound for well-equipped Mac models released as early as 2008. Listen to your movies and music in surround sound. Supports uncompressed 5.1-channel audio such as LPCM and compressed 5.1 channel audio such as DTS Digital or Dolby Digital.
| ||Mini DisplayPort meets HDMI |
Connect your Mac with Mini DisplayPort to any HDMI HDTV or projector. Now you can break free from your single display and view your content on a high definition display.
| ||USB-powered |
Don't bother with cumbersome power supplies that take up space. The iAdapt 51 includes a USB connector for power. It's even equipped with a red LED light to let you know it's on and working. Plug and play is easy!
Is the Kanex iAdapt 51 compatible with Mac OS X Lion (10.7) ?
Yes, the iAdapt 51 works great with Mac OS X Lion.
Is it possible to use the Kanex iAdapt 51 as an iAdapt 20? In other words, is it required to use the optical plug?
No it is not possible. The iAdapt 51 uses the USB plug as the power source, and uses the digital audio out (Toslink) as the audio source. The iAdapt 20 on the other hand uses the USB plug as the power source along with taking 2ch. audio via the USB port. You can only acheive sound from the iAdapt 51 if you use the Toslink cable.
Does the iAdapt 51 work with the Thunderbolt port?
Yes but keep in mind this product is design for Apple computers before April 2010 that has only video signal coming out of MDP port. If you have a newer Apple computer the Kanex iAdapt V2 will be a better solution for you which will get audio and video from MDP port to HDMI.
Will this cable let me play PS3 on my IMac?
No this cable allows you to take your Mini DisplayPort source such as a MacBook on a HDMI Display such as an HDTV and not the other way around. In order to play your PS3 on your iMac you will need the Kanex XD and a 27" iMac. You can view the product page here: http://kanexlive.com/products/kanexXD.html
will this cable connect my macbook model A1278 purchased in 2008 november to HDTV samsung
Yes the Kanex iAdapt 51 would be perfect for your system. It will work with your HDTV as long as it supports an HDMI input.
Is this only one cable?
This is one adapter with a pigtail of a USB Male and a Mini DisplayPort Male on one side and the other side has a female HDMI slot. No HDMI cable is included.
I ordered on of these: (Kanex iAdapt 51 Mini DisplayPort to HDMI® with 5.1 Channel Digital Audio). What HDMI cable will I need from this adapter to my SONY tv?? Would it be a HDMI with two male ends or one male and one female HDMI?? Thanks for your help. Richard E. DeLano 218-391-2058
You will need an HDMI Male to Male. Most TVs have a female HDMI slot and the iAdapt 51 has a female HDMI slot as well. If you have any additional questions please contact us at: http://kanexlive.com/contact/
I have a MacBook Pro that was purchased June 2009. I want a cable that will allow me to connect my laptop to my HDMI TV so that I can stream movies from my laptop. I am curious to know what the difference is between the iAdapt 51 and the iAdapt 20? Which would be better for my needs and would work better with my laptop? Thanks!
The difference between the Kanex iAdapt 51 and iAdapt 20 is relative to your audio system. Your MacBook is capable of using both the iAdapt 51 and iAdapt 20 since you have the Apple Mini Jack. If you're using 2 channel audio on your HDTV, then the Kanex iAdapt 20 will work best. If you have a surround sound system set up to support 5.1 surround sound, then you'll want to use the Kanex iAdapt 51.

Yes this cable will work for you and allow you to watch video and audio on an HDMI display
My adapter isn't working properly and the red light is off. Is there a way to reset it?
To obtain the best results, follow the enclosed instructions for set-up - Connect the HDMI cable first to sync to source followed by connecting the mini jack for audio, the Mini DisplayPort for video, and lastly the USB for power. All ports must be plugged in before you power “on” the adapter.
How do I get rid of the black border around the edge of the TV display?
You will want to turn on the overscan function. To do so, go to system preferences, then “displays”, followed by “arrangements” and tick the “overscan” button. This will allow the image to output at full screen. Learn more about this feature on our blog at http://www.kanexlive.com/blog/2009/10/over-and-under-scan-hdtv-1080p.html
Will it work if my TV does not go up to 1080p?
Yes. The adapter will automatically detect and switch to the highest resolution your display supports.
Will the audio work without connecting the Toslink connector?
No. Unlike the iAdapt 20, this adapter does not pass audio through USB. The Toslink must be connected for audio output.
Will the adapter work in sleep mode or with my Macbook closed?
The adapter will not allow your Mac to enter sleep mode unless the USB port on the adapter is disconnected. Refer to your Mac settings for instructions on how to turn sleep mode off when display is in clamshell.
Is there a troubleshooting guide for further technical help?
