Comparison of 8×8 HDMI Matrix Switchers from Atlona Technologies and Gefen

We are comparing two similar 8 by 8 HDMI Matrix Switchers made by Atlona Technologies and Gefen. These units both feature 8 HDMI inputs for High Definition sources. Atlona’s AT-PRO2HD88M can route 8 HDMI sources via cost efficient CAT cables to any of 8 HD displays, which can be located as far as 330ft away, using HDBaseT Technology. Gefen’s  GEF-HDFST-848-4 ELR features 4 HDMI and 4 CAT outputs. For its 4 CAT outputs this unit has 4 built-in HDBT extenders that can send signals for up to 330ft as well. Also POL (Power Over Link) technology is used in this Matrix, which eliminates the need to power 4 remotely located receivers. Atlona’s receivers for 8 outputs need to be powered at the location. Both of this switchers support HD resolutions, 3D and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master audio signals.

As far as control, the AT-PRO2HD88M can use any 3rd party controllers and IR remote controls. RS-232 and IR ports allow controlling the unit bidirectionally. Users can control the matrix and all the displays with RS-232 or control all connected devices with IR ports that are zone dedicated.

For GEF-HDFST-848-4 ELR each source can be accessed from any display anytime by using the included IR Remote Control, IP, RS-232 or by using the front-panel buttons.

FST (Fast Switching Technology) is a Gefen’s  software implementation for HDMI. It was designed to shorten the lengthy HDMI authentication process, based on HDCP and HDMI specifications. This technology allows turning any of the HDTV displays on or off, or connecting and disconnecting them without affecting other displays within the audio-video distribution system.

To recap the comparison of these devices it would be correct to say that both of them have advantages and disadvantages. For example the advantage of POL technology used by Gefen, that eliminates the need of powering remote receivers, while Atlona’s receivers need to be powered.  Though AT-PRO2HD88M has HDBaseT for each output, and therefore they can all transmit signals for up to 330ft., while only 4 outputs at GEF-HDFST-848-4 ELR can transmit signals for that distance.

Both of these units are using the latest technologies on the market, and can be an ideal solution for many applications.
